Let me tell you the story of “Right Hand, Left Hand.” It’s a tale of good and evil. Hate: It was with this hand that Cane iced his brother. Love: These five fingers, they go straight to the soul of man. The right hand: the hand of love. The story of life is this: Static. One hand is always fighting the other hand; and the left hand is kicking much ass. I mean, it looks like the right hand, Love, is finished. But, hold on, stop the presses, the right hand is coming back. Yeah, he got the left hand on the ropes, now, that’s right. Ooh, it’s the devastating right and Hate is hurt, he’s down. Left-Hand Hate K.O.ed by Love.

fee knicks

Today is my last day in Phoenix. Whereas this is true, I want to share three funny things I found here while teaching brilliant-but-generally-odorous 6-year-olds.
1. On my long, non-air-conditioned bus ride from ASU to Pastor, there were a lot of really funny signs. There was one that said, “DIVORCE: $200. MARRIAGE: $50.” And then, presumably, [...]

ill

I’m sitting in the airport right now listening to a few guys talk about the Bible across from me and browsing the Internet. Guess what? I found something cool in (wait for it… ;) The Wall Street Journal. They published an interview with the fiercely intelligent rapper Nas, along with a few music clips from his new [...]

many men

We got to get out of school early today. This is the only day this is true for the entire five-week training, so it’s kind of a big deal. But of course, with these three extra hours, I have no idea what to do with myself. I’ve been so inundated with every-second-of-my-life-is-planned-for-me, that I’m flailing. [...]

men in my life

Today was a rotten day at work. The concept of “capacity” is a little advanced for six-year-olds. Little did I know. Also Teach for America is crazy about this thing called the TAL Rubric, which makes you feel the equivalent feeling of watching a lot of CSPAN until your head gets really, really dizzy because [...]

milk cartons

So I’ve been teaching first graders here in Phoenix, Arizona. Here are some facts about Phoenix:

There are cool bicycle riders and cool vegan food here, even though it seems like cool vegans and cool bike riders should not be in Phoenix.
It’s the fifth largest city in the United States. I don’t understand this. Sometimes it [...]

fine but

you don’t understand. you think you understand, but you don’t. you are thinking, “of course sophie has abandoned her blog. her blog — the single most important thing in my entire life — is now null in void.” you are wrong. because you don’t understand. you don’t understand that there was a car accident and [...]

love again

Color Wars 2008 launched a really great project: They asked their site users to “recreate childhood photographs.”

In other words, you’re supposed to dig up an old picture of yourself and then recreate it NOW to the best of your abilities. It reminds me of the assignments on Learning to Love You More: Like, “Make [...]

andrew on animatronics

Via bee enthusiast Andrew Hall.
Concerning the Rock-Afire Explosion:
Throughout the 1980s, before Chuck E. Cheese took control of the remaining restaurants, ultimately more successful, there was Showbiz Pizza, which delivered much of what Chuck E. Cheese did: pizza, arcade games, screaming children, probably a ball pit, and horrifying animatronic bands. I’d write about the band from [...]

missing in action

I kind of dropped the ball last week, and I’m sorry. There are many perfectly good reasons for it, though, and I thought I might detail them for you so you can feel like you’re more involved in my life.
news.
My life mentor, Salim Muwakkil, came to speak at Whitman this week, which was a [...]

ninja typeface

Today I bring you just a few unrelated items for easy consumption.
1. Woman with ninja turtle poodle:

So I guess the story here is that there’s some contest out there called the SuperGroom, and in this contest you’re supposed to maim style your dog to look like something else. This colorfully-dressed woman (comically named Myra Macia — 4real)  won [...]
